Fitness means a lot of different things to different people and different situations. The most general meaning of fitness in everyday conversation is the state of being physically active on a regular basis to maintain good physical condition. In this usage fitness may as well mean
physical fitness. Wellness, an equally broad term, generally means being healthy and disease free.
The Scientific Facts Behind Fitness and Wellness
There are many perspectives behind fitness and wellness. Some perspectives like Oriental perspectives that involve kung-fu or acupuncture and New Age alternative medicine are not of my interest. My interest is in free scientific information about fitness and wellness that can be browsed from the internet without ever having to register for a membership at an expensive gym or pay for a world-class trainer. According to a research group sponsored by the US Government, physical fitness cannot be strictly defined into a few sentences but one can point out four aspects of
physical fitness and the concepts associated with these aspects. The first aspect of physical fitness is the physiological aspect. The physiological aspect involves the metabolic, morphological and bone integrity characteristics of the human body. The health-related aspect, which is the second aspect, involves the health related aspect and pertains to body composition, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular endurance and muscular strength. The skill-related aspect involves agility, balance, motor coordination, power, speed and reaction time. The last aspect or the sports aspect uses concepts like team, individual and lifetime. Now, these aspects may use different terms because different groups and different organizations prefer one aspect over the other but the aspects refer to the same thing. These aspects are the same in that they all point to the ability of people to accomplish physical tasks, activities or feats in a given time and situation. As we all know, one can optimize
physical fitness by following a regimen recommended by experts that usually involves proper diet, training and rest. The results of the regimen are then calibrated by a set of physical activities and tasks that can test the reliability of the program.

With the recent breakthroughs in biomedical research, genetic engineering and human physiology, traditional programs of rigorous training and strict diets are now improved by new techniques. In other words, the benchmark for physical fitness and wellness has been raised to a higher level. This is only right for us because the demands of modern day situations and problems are more challenging than before and traditional methods may either be inadequate or time-consuming. Nowadays, tasks demand not only physical, but mental and emotional mastery. The strains of an overpopulated world with limited resources are now being felt by everyone.
